The Perfect Cure for a Hangover

Because Thursday night was our last night in town, we accidentally had a few too many drinks and stayed out a little too late.  We woke up Friday morning feeling less than great but were very excited about going to the burn center for the last time to present our cake and say our goodbyes.  We got there around 11 AM and because the doctors still had over an hour left in the OR, we were able to spend some quality time with the kids with whom we had gotten to know very well over the previous three weeks.  All three of us were in very goofy and playful moods and within minutes we had all four kids in the room hysterical with laughter.  We found a small toy motorcycle and spent over 45 minutes building a ramp and crashing it into the wall over and over and over in response to their persistent demands to "do it again, do it again!"  Not only were we able to make them laugh, but we were also able to feel like kids again ourselves, almost forgetting about the profoundly sad and heartbreaking things we had seen these children endure over the previous weeks.  In that moment with such positive, beautiful, and resilient children, each of us realized just how lucky we are to be involved in such an incredible and rewarding profession.  That, and it served as the perfect antidote to the world’s worst hangover!
